In 2002, Sam Houston High School in San Antonio, Texas,
graduated the last class known as the Cherokees. Subsequently, the school changed the mascot name to the "Hurricanes." Many
alumni did not agree with this change, pointing to Sam Houston's life for why the Cherokee name was appropriate and should
not have been offensive to anyone who was aware of his history. He lived with the Cherokees both in Tennessee and Oklahoma/Arkansas,
was a member of the Cherokee Nation, had a Cherokee name ('Colonneh', or the Raven), served as a representative of the Cherokee
Nation in Washington DC, and had a Cherokee wife at one time.
